Usel partner with Avenue Recycling to create Environmental and Social Impact

Avenue Recycling has announced today its newly formed strategic partnership with Usel (Ulster Supported Employment and Learning).

The South Belfast based company has partnered with Ulster Supported Employment Ltd. (Usel), which aims to create employment opportunities for people living with a disability or health condition, to support on the delivery of their recently awarded mattress and carpet recycling contract from Antrim and Newtownabbey council.

The partnership will aim to deliver the council targets in reducing waste to landfill whilst also creating job opportunities for people living with a disability or health conditions.

Usel are currently the only mattress recycling provider in Northern Ireland. The mattresses are disassembled into various components, such as foam, polyester and steel and sometimes include a range of natural fibres like wool and cotton depending on the type of mattress. 96% of each mattress is recycled, the remaining 4% is sent to energy from waste. In 2017 the organisation diverted over 959 tonnes of landfill from waste and this year to date have recycled over 30,000 mattresses.Speaking about the partnership Scott Jackson, Head of Recycling and Production for Usel said “We are delighted that Avenue Recycling has chosen Usel as a key partner in the delivery of their services to Antrim and Newtownabbey Council. Usel has seen rapid growth in our mattress and carpet recycling operations in the last two years and we are keen to continue to further develop this facility across Northern Ireland. This is a great opportunity for commercial and social enterprise organisations to work together to create social impact within the Circular Economy.”

Avenue Recycling is a family run company and the owner and Managing Director Mal Lavery has always worked on the principal of providing a quality service with staff employed from across the community.

Mal and his management team are delighted to be working in partnership with USEL on this new contract for Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council. USELs unique service and principles in providing employment along with having the only recycling solution for mattresses in Northern Ireland makes our decision to partner with USEL a privilege not a decision.

Avenue Recycling has been working with USEL for the past two years in providing a haulage service and metal recycling that helps deliver a 96% recycling return with only 4% going to energy from waste on their mattress service.

The partnership that Avenue Recycling has with USEL is by far the best decision that we have made in supporting the excellent work that USEL has been doing for many years and with the direction of Scott Jackson and its CEO, Bill Atkinson this will no doubt continue for many more years…..

NEW CONTRACT AND VEHICLE FLEET MARKS EXCITING TIME FOR AVENUE RECYCLING

2018 continues to be an exciting year for Avenue Recycling as the company continues to grow and develop. The recent appointment by Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council marks a significant contract which will see Avenue Recycling managing the household collections of black and brown bins in the area. This marks the very first time a local council in Northern Ireland has outsourced its household collections to a third party which emphasises the scale of this new contract.

Avenue Recycling are no strangers to the Antrim & Newtownabbey area, having been awarded the green collection contract in 2011. Now 7 years later, the company will manage household waste collection for around 58,000 homes in the council area, covering towns, villages and rural locations. The new contract with Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council runs until 2023, with the aim to extend this partnership beyond that year.

Albert Magill, Contracts Manager for Avenue Recycling said: “We are absolutely delighted to be working in partnership with the council. We are in the final stages of completing the roll out of the new service across the borough, having begun the process in May. Recently, we have appointed new staff members to join the Avenue Recycling team as part of this new partnership. We are confident the council will be satisfied with our efficient and effective service and hopefully we can continue this collaboration past 2023”.

Not only have Avenue appointed around 21 new staff members as a result of the new contract, they have also invested heavily in nine brand new trucks. The Mercedes Benz Econic refuse trucks are the most modern of their kind with state-of-the-art features. The 26 tonne trucks house a 360 degree camera from Sentinel Systems that complement the standard mirror system that expands the field of vision to include work areas and blind spots. The Econic vehicles also contain an axle load indicator system that provides the operator with daily support, constantly monitoring the current vehicle load and overload, an extremely useful vehicle for Avenue Recycling staff.

NI Childrens Hospice: SPARKLE DASH 2017

This year the Ni Children’s Hospice hosted their annual 5K Sparkle Dash on August 6th. The event was to raise money to aid the continued support and care given by the Hospice to children, teens and adults across NI. Avenue Recycling were delighted to be given the opportunity to get involved in the great cause and play our part by providing a complimentary event waste package for the event.  Without the help and support of local businesses and communities the hospice would not be able to make the incredible difference to the lives of many families here in Northern Ireland.

“On behalf of Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice, I just wanted to drop a quick note to express my sincere thanks for your support during the Mauds Sparkle Dash 5k. Without your kindness we would not be able to run big fundraising events. Your support enabled the Hospice to enquire vital funds which help us to provide specialist hospice care for local people.  It is with support from people and companies like you that we can continue to provide a service which is free of charge to local people and their families. Your time and help is an amazing gift to give and will mean a great deal to the patients and their families who receive this care.  On their behalf we thank you.” – Avenue Recycling are proud to support the NI Children’s Hospice (Sparkle Dash 2017)

RWM/ CIWM Gala Dinner- Sept 17

On September 13th Mal and Hannah flew to Birmingham to attend this year’s RWM Exhibition.  RWM is the leading community for the Waste, Energy, Recycling and Water sectors to network, learn and trade. It is important to keep up to date with any changes in the industry as well as any new vehicles/machinery that may add to our company. Hannah and Mal were also invited by ERP to attend the CIWM Gala Dinner held at the Hilton Metropole. This was a great event to network with others in the industry and enjoy a fantastic event put on by CIWM.
